Wheeler Arts Community
The Southeast Neighborhood Development Corporation (SEND) commissioned studioAXIS to renovate an existing 2-story square foot carburetor manufacturing facility. The building, built in 1910, was reimagined to serve as an artists’ housing and education/exhibition space.
studioAXIS worked to affect a difficult conversion within the constraints of the budget of a non-profit organization by working alongside the construction manager to insure the design could be accomplished within the established cost parameters. Funding from the community and financial institutions, coupled with leveraged historic and low-income housing tax credits, posed a challenging budget that required an innovative approach to materials. The scope of the renovation included repair to existing industrial components, masonry, windows, and skylights. Much of the existing character was retained, allowing it to enhance the character of the new facility.
