1800 + 1840

The redesign of 1800 + 1840 breathes new life into an office building originally completed in 1971, upholding the tradition of great lobby spaces in Los Angeles and providing tenants and guests with an elegant, first-class experience. While the size, arrangement, and program of the lobby remains unchanged, the design injects a new sophistication into the space by blending a modern aesthetic with high-quality materials.

Innovation transforms the classic materials of glass, limestone, and granite in minimalist ways, balancing traditional and forward-thinking architecture. A structural glass wall—and artwork in and of itself—define the lobby exterior and entry, welcoming users in from the street. Echoing the classic quality of the glass, the lobby’s limestone walls, and exterior garden areas, the spaces glow with subtle lighting that brings focus to and highlights the simplicity of the materials. The serene, handcrafted elegance of the new lobby encourages occupants to linger in the warm environment rather than simply pass through.

The Design endeavored to create a new environment to encourage collaboration, offer flexibility, and break down barriers of private research practices. Conventional research buildings lack transparency and connection among users and the outside world. We broke these rules of conventional lab organization by arranging “petals” of functional space around a central courtyard. This maximizes daylight and views while visually and spatially connecting the activities throughout the building. By designing from the inside out, we created a research headquarters that promotes collaborative interaction to facilitate rapid advancements in cardiovascular research.
