Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse
A contemporary civic icon for the Long Beach Civic Center, the Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse in Southern California presents a stunning new image for the courts system and transforms the way the judicial system serves the citizens of Los Angeles County.
The Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse located along Magnolia Avenue in Long Beach, California is situated on a two-block, six-acre site. The five-story building houses 31 courtrooms, as well as court administration offices, Los Angeles County judicial agency lease space, and retail leasable space on the ground level. The building includes below-grade detention facilities and separate secure parking for judges. A five-level, open atrium, enclosed on the two exterior perimeters by a cable-supported glass curtain wall system, serves as the single-entry point for all building occupants and provides access to a secured exterior courtyard, designed for visitors doing business in the courthouse.
The building is clad in a deeply articulated curtain wall and elements of stone at the building’s base, the project spans two city blocks in downtown Long Beach one block northwest of the previous courthouse. In addition to the new building, the design team also renovated and expanded an existing 400,000 F² parking structure located across the street. The courthouse was designed to achieve LEED™ Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council but was ultimately certified as LEED Gold with no additional cost to the State of California.
