Indy Mod – David Residence
Located in the historic Cottage Home Neighborhood, Indy Mod 1 is the first prefabricated home in Indianapolis. Designed as a modern interpretation of a historic cottage home, Indy Mod 1 is part of a seven-home masterplan.
The Indy Mod 1 was built in Bristol, Indiana 3 hours away from the project site and was fabricated in 28 days, delivered to the site, and assembled in a single day.
Using Indy Mod 1 as the precedent for the remaining six lots, the design was focused on defining the character of what the modern interpretation of a historic home in the area should be. Historic Cottage Home’s architecture is diverse, ranging from single-level shotgun bungalows to Italianates to gable front, Gothic Revival homes. It was important for the Indy Mod homes to have their own style, to be of their own time, and not to imitate the past. The goal for the design of these prefabricated homes was to reference the form, color, massing, and materiality of the existing neighborhood but to create a modern home that was respectful of its heritage.
