Taxman Brewing Company
Taxman Brewing Company is a brewery and two-story restaurant in Bargersville, Indiana. The owners wanted to make a splash in the small town by creating a rustic, yet modern aesthetic in which to serve their Belgian-inspired beers.
studioAXIS renovated an existing warehouse and constructed an addition to house the new brewery. The dynamic space evolved from exposing the existing beauty of the building. By sandblasting and exposing the concrete block, the naturally rough texture provides a rich backdrop to the dining areas on the first and second floor. Leaving the wood ceiling structure exposed provides a contrast to the exposed concrete block.
Large window openings and glass overhead doors on the south side of the restaurant bring in light (and are open during the warmer months). The patio mimics the interior with a wood fence and steel fire pit. Inside, a large section of the second floor was removed to add a dramatic, two-story volume to the first-floor dining area. Bare Edison bulbs accentuate the rustic look while providing a warm glow throughout the restaurant. Salvaged barn wood, resin countertops, Carrea marble, subway tile, and polished concrete are all used in the $1.5 million design. When combined, these elements create a dynamic space with views of farmland. It’s the perfect backdrop to enjoy a good Indiana brew.
