Wayne Township Fire Department No. 82
With unprecedented growth in the City of Indianapolis, the Wayne Township Fire Department No. 82 is a modern building located 5 miles west of downtown, in a combined structure that includes the fire department and the Wayne Township Government Center.
Located along West Washington Street, Station No. 82 presents a modern approach to the classic fire station. Appropriately scaled to the local context with a materials palette that blends classic materials with a fresh new palette, the introduction of glass & red metallic overhead doors placed within a red brick façade frame the ground level housing the fire department’s operations, while a glazed & aluminum panel second level that houses the living and sleeping quarters, create the two-part composition that elegantly addresses the street.
The five apparatus bays and associated equipment, along with 13 firefighters, are the infrastructure that provides service to the Wayne Township community. Station No. 82 features bi-folding glass & metal doors and clerestory windows that lighten the masonry facades, provide the apparatus bays with natural light and create transparency and illumination at night. The building’s program also called for a community room that is prominently featured on the second floor with a recessed balcony overlooking West Washington Street.
