Westminster Police Department
The Westminster Police Department in Westminster, California is a new police department and emergency operations center that is skillfully placed within the Westminster Civic Center that creates harmony with the existing context while also transforming the spirit of place to create the next generation of development.
As the largest building in Westminster, the scale of the building appropriately addresses the context of the existing Civic Center which is based on single story brick buildings dating back to the 1970’s. By establishing a one-story brick base and placing two glass volumes on the base, the design of the brick base respects the Civic Center’s context while the glass volumes look towards the future.
The program of the Westminster Police Department includes Records, Forensic Services, Property & Evidence, Patrol, the Traffic Division, Detention, Investigations, Fitness & Locker Rooms, Administration, Information Services, Office of the Chief, and Communications which handled all of the emergency response systems for the City of Westminster. A two-story skylit atrium in between the two glass volumes acts as the living room for the employees providing a place of rest and respite.
