Haikou Roll-On | Roll-Off Terminal
The Haikou RO | RO Terminal in Haikou is China’s new ferry boat terminal on Hainan Island transporting nearly 20 million passengers annually between Hainan Island and Mainland China. The terminal will serve as a transportation hub for generations to come and stand as an iconic symbol for the City of Haikou.
The Haikou RO | RO Terminal is designed as a sustainable and powerful building form that floats above the land, providing flexibility on a site formed by reclaimed land, by allowing traffic circulation patterns to take precedent, streamlining the operational efficiency of the facility. Together, the operational and energy efficiencies served by the iconic building have created a world class facility that will make the Haikou RO | RO Terminal an architectural and environmental showcase for transportation terminals globally.
The terminal’s program contains five primary functions including ticketing, passenger waiting, administration, retail, and parking for 700 cars. With the program elevated above the ground allowing free movement at the ground plane, the building is layered vertically to create separate and distinct passenger and vehicular movement to occur without conflict while accommodating all of the required program in a clear and systematic way. The site is also layered horizontally from Xin Hai Zhong Road towards Xinhai Harbor creating the necessary passenger drop-off, security checkpoints, and vehicle maneuvering procedures to occur for efficient ground operations without conflict.
